Tehran during Ramadan: ‘nobody is really in the spirit’

http://www.theguardian.com/world/series/tehran-bureau  – 15th August 2013

Iran has been referred to as a post-Islamist society – one in which conservative religious discourse and practices are losing their hold after decades of state promulgation. Iranians’ perspectives on the holy month of Ramadan, observed in Iran this year from 10 July to 8 August, appear to underline that view.

During Ramadan, in addition to taking special care to avoid certain sins mentioned in the Qur’an, Muslims must abstain from food or drink of any kind during daylight hours, a long stretch in the middle of the summer. The first call to prayer arrives shortly after 4am and the final call just after 8pm. The rules must be abided by throughout, and the summer heat – this year regularly nearing 40C – doesn’t make the job any easier.

Tehran’s Vanak Square bustles with hyperkinetic foot traffic at six in the evening. Maliheh, a 56-year-old employee at an car company who has come to pick up prescription medicine, shares her thoughts on Ramadan. “You know, I just love the atmosphere,” she says.

Asked what she loves most about it, she sneers. “Seriously? Who could find anything to like about this? Seventeen hours of fasting in 40-degree weather? It’s a living hell! We all sneak bites here and there at work, save for a few people who are scared about not getting promotions and whatnot,” she says with a laugh.

The real War on Women is being waged in the Islamic world

By: Raymond Ibrahim  7/24/2013

One of the few positive developments following the rise of the Islamists during the “Arab Spring” is that today many average and/or nominal Muslims are seeing the true face of Islam and its teachings. And many—as evinced by the June 30 Revolution of Egypt, which saw the ousting of the Muslim Brotherhood—don’t want to deal with it.

For example, during a recent episode of “With Dr. Islam Buhira” on Al Qahira Wa Al Nass TV station, Buhira explained how he had attended “a conference in Morocco on the status of women in society post Arab Spring,” and how at the conference, the following interpretation of the Koran by renowned Islamic exegete, al-Qurtubi (d.1273), was read: “Women are like cows, horses, and camels, for all are ridden.”

After quoting al-Qurtubi’s words, Dr. Buhira continued, in a disappointed tone: “This is how al-Qurtubi speaks about women, who include his mother, his daughters—basically all Muslim women. He says they are ‘all ridden.’ This is what makes them similar to animals.”

Hard to believe or not, the idea that “Women are like cows, horses, and camels, for all are ridden,” is in fact recorded in Tafsir al-Qurtubi (see vol. 17, p. 172), one of the Islamic world’s most authoritative exegesis, or commentary on the teachings of the Koran.

In fact, comparing women to beasts is not uncommon in Islam and traces back to Prophet Muhammad himself, who is recorded saying, “Women, dogs, and donkeys annul a man’s prayer (Musnad Ibn Hanbal, vol. 2, p. 2992).

Sharia Committee Issues Fatwa Against … Croissants

Al Arabiya ^ | Tuesday, 30 July 2013 |

A sharia committee in a rebel-held area of Aleppo issued a fatwa deeming croissants ‘haram’ (forbidden in Islamic law) because of their “colonial” significance, pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat reported on Tuesday.

Croissants’ crescent shape celebrates European victory over Muslims, according to the fatwa (religious ruling).

Rebel-controlled areas of the Syrian city have experienced several strict fatwas recently from Islamic sharia committees.

Such edicts are uncommon in Aleppo’s society, which usually adheres to moderate Islamic teachings, Asharq al-Awsat reported.

A sharia committee in the city issued a fatwa on Facebook prohibiting “Muslim women wearing makeup and tight clothes that reveal physical features from going out.”

Britain: Muslim Prison Population Up 200%

by Soeren Kern – August 2, 2013

“Nowadays jails are run mostly by Muslims … It hurts as a Muslim to have someone disrespect my religion. If we deal with him one time, with violence, and show him what time it is, he will never disrespect our religion again … For Muslims, you’d say it’s good, but for non-Muslims, it’s very, very bad.” — Jay, five-time former inmate, quoted by the BBC

The number of Muslim convicts in British prisons has surpassed the 11,000 mark for the first time, according to data included in a new report produced by the British Parliament.

The statistics — from a July 29 House of Commons research report entitled, “Prison Population Statistics” — show that the number of Muslim inmates in England and Wales jumped to 11,248 in 2012, up from 3,681 in 1997. Stated another way, over the past 15 years, the number of Muslims in British prisons has jumped by more than 200%.

The rate of increase of Muslim inmates in British prisons is eight times faster than that of the overall prison population, and the numbers show a clear overrepresentation of Muslim convicts: Muslims, who make up roughly 5% of the British population as a whole, now make up 13% of the British prison population (compared to just 6% in 1997).

Tony Blair: Woolwich attack shows there is a problem ‘within Islam’

Telegraph.co.ukBy Peter Dominiczak, Political Correspondent – Monday 03 June 2013

Tony Blair has warned that there is a problem “within Islam” as he described the ideology behind incidents like the Woolwich terror attack as “profound and dangerous”.

Mr Blair, the former prime minister, used a column in the Mail on Sunday to call on the Government to “be honest” and admit that there is a widespread problem with the religion.

In a major intervention following the murder of soldier Lee Rigby, Mr Blair said “the seeds of future fanaticism and terror” were being sown and that children in the UK and abroad must be educated about the place of religion in society.

Mr Blair said: “There is not a problem with Muslims in general. Most in Britain will be horrified at Lee Rigby’s murder.

“But there is a problem within Islam – from the adherents of an ideology that is a strain within Islam. And we have to put it on the table and be honest about it.”

Mr Blair added: “The seeds of future fanaticism and terror, possibly even major conflict, are being sown. We have to help sow seeds of reconciliation and peace. But clearing the ground for peace is not always peaceful.”

UK: Muslim girls “silent over sex abuse”

www.jihadwatch.org

“It’s because they feel they will be labelled for bringing dishonour upon themselves and their families.” Not just “labelled.” Murdered. Honor-killed. “South Asian girls ‘silent over sex abuse,'” by Shabnam Mahmood for BBC News, May 31 (thanks to Henry):

South Asian girls who have been sexually abused are less likely to report their ordeal than children from other backgrounds, a parliamentary inquiry into child grooming has been told.

Girls from Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi backgrounds are reluctant to come forward for fear of being alienated or ostracised by their communities.

Alyas Karmani, director of Street – a Bradford-based group working with vulnerable young people – told the Home Affairs Committee young Asian girls were more vulnerable to groomers because “they are unlikely to talk about it”.

He said: “It’s because they feel they will be labelled for bringing dishonour upon themselves and their families.

World Council of Churches attacks Israel to no gain

Dexter Van Zile – 3 June 2013

No matter how much the World Council of Churches dumps on Israel, Christians living in the Middle East are still being attacked.

Late last month, 150 Christian leaders met in Lebanon under the auspices of the World Council of Churches(WCC) to talk about the status of Christians living in the Middle East, where, as most people know, followers of Christ are suffering from terrible acts of oppression at the hands of Muslim extremists.

Some Muslims, particularly in Egypt, have stood in solidarity with their Christian compatriots after these attacks, but for the most part, attacks against Christians continue without much organized opposition from Muslim activists or governments in the Middle East. Egyptian police, for example, have stood by and even assisted in attacks against Christians and their churches.

Sometimes the anti-Christian violence manifests itself as poorly organized (but terrifying) mob attacks against churches and their members. These mob attacks often take place after an imam has incited anti-Christian hostility in his Friday sermon. Other attacks are well-planned jihad bombings perpetrated on Christian holidays (such as Christmas or Easter) that result in deaths of dozens of Christians at once.

Such attacks have a cumulative impact. Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi, the Vatican’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations, recently announced that more than 100,000 Christians are killed as a result of their faith each year. Tomasi didn’t mention exactly who was responsible for these deaths, but he didn’t have to.

We know who is responsible – radical Muslims intent on sending a very clear and simple message that Christians are not welcome or safe in Muslim countries.

Muslim violence against Christians is not a new phenomenon. It dates back to Islam’s founding according to Raymond Ibrahim, author of Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians (Regnery, 2013). “Under Muslim rule, from the seventh century to the present, tens if not hundreds of thousands of churches once spread across thousands of miles of formerly Christian lands have been attacked, plundered, ransacked, and destroyed or converted into mosques,” he writes.

The ‘Muslims-Killed-by-the-West’ Lie

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com|– By Dennis Prager – 29th May 2013

The alleged butcher of the off-duty British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, defended his carving up of a living human being by claiming that he was engaging in “an eye for an eye” because the British army is killing Muslims in Afghanistan.

Normally there is no reason to respond to the justifications offered by terrorists and other murderers of the innocent. But in this case it is important to do so because much of the Muslim world resonates to this argument and because much of the world’s left offers this argument.

This is true even though a large majority of Muslims do not support terror and even though leftists do not support it. Nevertheless, throughout the Muslim and leftist worlds it is believed — and our children are taught this at college — that America, the UK. and other countries are targeted by Muslims because we kill Muslims.

The argument is morally perverse and a lie.

First, the U.K. and others are in Afghanistan in order to defend Muslims. Brits and other Westerners are risking their lives, and dying, in that country on behalf of Muslims.

The impact of Islamic Sharia Courts in Britain

Salt Shakers – E- News 18th July 2013

In the UK, Islamic ‘Sharia Councils’ or courts have been established – under legislation which provided for the establishment of Arbitration Tribunals. There are now 85 such sharia courts around the UK which make rulings according to Islamic law.

A BBC documentary, presented by reporter Jane Corbin, recently exposed what happens in some of these Sharia Councils.
Link to the video is below.

Many people have expressed concern about the use of these Sharia Courts – they deal with a range of issues such as marital disputes, domestic violence, divorce and othermatters.
Since the Sharia Councils operate in accordance with Islamic law, the rulings are sometimes not in accordance with British law and they often disadvantage women. They sometimes deal with areas, such as child custody, which are supposed to be dealt with by the regular court system. Those subjected to the rulings often feel they have to obey them, even though they are not legally binding.

There should be ONE law for ALL – not a separatesystem operating on Islamic law. We need to learn from the British experience – and reject any introduction of ‘sharia law’ courts or rulings in Australia.

Baroness Cox, a member of the House of Lords, introduced the Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill legislation into the House of Lords in October 2012. The Bill is aimed at curbing the growth of parallel legal systems in the UK. The Bill would limit the power of the Sharia Courts and ensure they operate in accordance with British law, especially in areas such as polygamy, divorce and discrimination against women (source).

Time to re think Islamic terrorism – It’s a war stupid

Irish Central ^ | Ed Farnan – Posted on May 29, 2013

The Boston terror bombing brings home the fact we are in a state of war, even though our government leaders don’t want to acknowledge it.

The attitude by the present administration is eerily similar to what the Clinton administration had, that lead up to the 9/11/2001 terror attacks. Criminalizing terror is in fact ignoring the active war being waged against our country and western society. As if we don’t name it, then it doesn’t really exist.

During the Clinton administration, our world trade center was attacked with a truck bomb and our embassies in Africa were bombed killing hundreds.

Later, in a frank moment, Clinton admitted he screwed up when he had a chance to kill Osama Bin Laden and didn’t take it, because: He had “no controlling legal authority to do so.”

This is lawyer talk, not a commander in chief who is responsible for the safety of American citizens….

Has Egypt’s experiment with Islamism failed?

By Dan Murphy JewishWorldReview.com |

The Muslim Brotherhood’s dominance may be over but its members may yet rejoice.

Making sense of the rough and tumble of politics in the shadow of the pyramids

CAIRO — (TCSM) When mass protests broke out against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Jan. 25, 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood was on the cusp of a historic opportunity.

The Brothers didn’t start or organize the protests. That honor belonged to a loose coalition of leftists, democratic reformers, and Internet activists who used the murder of a young businessman by Egypt’s thuggish police, and the example of Tunisia’s own revolt, as the springboard for a history-altering uprising. The Brotherhood, fearful of a government crackdown as always, didn’t even join the protests until the handwriting was on the wall.

But the Brothers knew they were Egypt’s most popular and best-organized grass-roots movement and were perfectly poised to take advantage of a political opening. They grabbed the opportunity.

Now, 2-1/2 years later Mohamed Morsi, the man the Brothers propelled to Egypt’s presidency, is under house arrest, and his allies swept from political office and influence by the military. Brotherhood news media have been shuttered and arrest warrants issued for the group’s leaders. The same military that gave them their chance at power when it deposed Mr. Mubarak booted them from office in a second coup after protests that dwarfed those of 2011.

Media Censors London Beheader Using Koran to Justify Atrocity

May 22, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield

You know that part in the video where the announcer is speaking over the Muslim killer. That’s the part where the killer is saying, “Many, many Ayah throughout the Koran that we must fight them as they fight us.” Instead the official media video cuts the Koran part out and picks up only when the Muslim killer says, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

That doctrine is used today by Muslim countries to demand a literal eye for an eye justice.

In August 2000, the Saudi Arabian media reported that Abdel Moti Abdel Rahman Mohammad, a 37-year-old-Egyptian national was subjected to forcible surgical removal of his left eye at King Fahd Hospital in Medina. The operation was carried out as a judicial punishment of Qisas after he was found guilty of disfiguring Shahata Ajami Mahmoud, a 53-year-old Egyptian.

So it’s not some sort of misunderstanding. This is mainstream Islam. And it’s horrifying.

But there is a larger context. The Koran, as usual, is blasting the Jews for not keeping the law of Allah, which Mohammed believed, actually involved taking out an eye for an eye.  The Jews never practiced this. Mohammed however insisted on it and laid out proper doctrine.

“The reward of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to create disorder in the land is only this that they be slain or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on alternate sides, or they be expelled from the land.” (Quran 5:34)

Saudi Arabia sentences men to lashes for converting woman to Christianity

Reuters | 13 May, 2013 10:22

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced two men to lashes and prison terms for converting a woman to Christianity and helping her flee the conservative Islamic kingdom, the Saudi Gazette reported on Monday.

A Lebanese man was sentenced to six years in prison and 300 lashes for converting the woman, while a Saudi man was sentenced to two years and 200 lashes for aiding her escape abroad, the English-language daily said. It added that the pair had challenged the verdict and would appeal.

A spokesman at the justice ministry could not immediately be reached for comment.

In Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, it is against the law for Muslims to abandon their faith, a practice known as apostasy. Proselytising for other religions or practising them openly is also illegal.

Judges have considerable leeway in how to interpret the kingdom’s Sharia code of Islamic law and are not bound by sentencing guidelines or a system of precedent. Both capital and corporal punishment are legal. (more…)
