The ‘Risen’ movie: an unbeliever confronts the empty tomb

Feb 22, 2016 – (BreakPoint

February 22, 2016 (BreakPoint) — “Ben Hur,” “The Robe,” “The Ten Commandments,” “Quo Vadis?”—who can forget the golden age of biblical films? But that was the 1950s, and this is 2016.

Biblically based movies these days often comes across as, well, less than inspired. Writers and directors sometimes play fast and loose with the source material, leaving out crucial details and inventing some bizarre stuff. Worse, portrayals of God often come across as flippant or even blasphemous. And that’s just not something I enjoy watching.

Well, I want to urge you to give the genre another chance. Because a film that hit theaters this past weekend proves that swords-and-sandals productions based on the Bible can still hold their own against “Ben Hur.”

“Risen,” directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Joseph Fiennes, is the story of the manhunt for the corpse of Jesus Christ. Spoiler alert: They don’t find it.

Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao defends natural marriage, gets pummelled by Western press

Feb 16, 2016

MANILA, Philippines, February 16, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Eight-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is the target of a Western newsmedia blitz misquoting him as having said that homosexuals were “worse than animals.”

In his homeland Philippines, Pacquiao is a hugely popular sports figure for winning world boxing titles in eight weight classifications, climaxing with the welterweight championship in 2014. In training for a comeback match in the U.S. in May after losing his title last year, a member of the Philippines House of Representative now campaigning for a Senate seat, and born-again Christian, he is now facing “a storm” of criticism, according to British and American news media, for comments on same-sex “marriage.”

“It’s common sense,” the boxer replied to a reporter’s query. “Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female? The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve male on male, female on female then man is worse than animals.”

America’s Most Urgent Need as the New Year Begins Is National Repentance

December 27, 2015

America’s most urgent need as the New Year begins is national repentance.

“I am struck by the high level of anxiety and worry on all fronts,” said Robert Jones, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, as PRRI released its American Values Survey November 17.

There are many obvious causes of national nervousness: terrorism, crime and domestic unrest, political weakness and uncertainty, economic woes, and moral collapse, to name a few.

Yet there is unidentifiable angst in the national soul. In our travels and interactions with people across the United States, we conclude this hidden distress is spiritual.

America needs revival, but first there must be national repentance.

Ancient Israel shows how it’s possible for a whole nation to repent. There are powerful examples showing how repentance brought return to God, and restoration of the nation to its values and the best of its history, as well as security and general well-being.

On Pakistan’s Death Row, Awaiting Her Final Hearing, Asia Bibi Sends a Message of Forgiveness for Her Persecutors

Jeremy Reynalds : Dec 29, 2015 : ASSIST News

“Christmas is a celebration of God’s mercy. I forgive my persecutors, those who have made false accusations against me, and I await their forgiveness.”

A story by Paolo Affatato for La Stampa, an Italian newspaper published in Turin, reported that this was the seventh Christmas she spent behind bars, in the women’s prison in Multan. That’s a town in the province of Punjab, where Asia awaits the outcome of a re-examination of her blasphemy conviction.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court, the third and final stage in the trial, has accepted Asia’s petition to appeal against her death sentence. The wait is now on for a hearing date to be set so that her final verdict can be issued.

For this 50-year-old mother of five, Christmas in the Year of Mercy, is a celebration of forgiveness.

It Began with a Tree

Monday, December 7, 2015

And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. —Genesis 2:9

The Christmas story begins with a tree, but not the kind of Christmas tree with brightly colored lights or ornaments. The Christmas story begins with a tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, in the Garden of Eden.

God had given Adam and Eve only one restriction in that literal paradise: stay away from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But before long, that’s just where we find them. Of course, we know the rest of the story. They listened to the serpent and ate the forbidden fruit. And once that happened, they lost their sweet fellowship with God.

A few verses later, we come to the first Christmas verse in the Bible, where God said to the serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (more…)

Where is Israel on evangelical Christian voters’ list of priorities?

August 27, 2015 by Paul Stanley of JNS.org

Seventeen Republican presidential candidates are vying for the support of evangelical Christian voters from the swing states of Ohio and Florida, to the cornfields of Iowa, to the small towns of the Deep South. Within the varied spectrum of 2016 election issues such as the economy, immigration, and health care, do evangelicals highly prioritize candidates’ positions on Israel and the Middle East?

Major evangelical leaders in America are saying, “Yes.”

“Studies show us there are approximately 90 million Christians in America who consider their beliefs to be evangelical,” Tony Perkins—president of the Family Research Council (FRC), a Christian education and lobbying group—told JNS.org. “Of that number around 9-10 percent have what we call a ‘biblical worldview,’ in that they believe what the scriptures say pertaining to Israel. That’s a large number of voters who can definitely make a difference in a primary or general election.”

Kim Phuc, Woman in Iconic 1972 Vietnam War Photo, Learns to Forgive through Her Christian Faith

By Isaiah Narciso (news@gospelherald.com) Jun 27, 2015

The iconic image that portrayed the horrors of the Vietnam War featured a 9-year-old girl running away naked from a napalm attack, suffering from burns back in 1972. That girl, Kim Phuc, recently met the photographer who shot that famous picture and is now a Christian.

According to Dianne Bourne of the Mirror, 52-year-old Phuc reunited with Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut, who took the picture that made front page news around the world, in England. She now works as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and campaigns for peace around the world.

“When I look at the image I’m just amazed that I’m still alive, I’m so grateful and thankful for that,” Phuc said. “I have learned from tragedy, from the pain, from the challenges, and I’m so grateful to be healed.”

Gospel Still Spreading Despite Nepal’s New Constitution That Bans Converting Others

Christian Aid Mission Staff : Nov 13, 2015 : Gospel Herald

“When there was persecution, professing the name of Christ was very costly, but since the government became secular there’s freedom, and because of that there’s a lot of false teaching coming in, so it’s imperative that they know what true teaching is.”

(Nepal)—Nepal has quietly enshrined a long-time ban on proselytizing in its new constitution. For an indigenous ministry in Nepal that has long found ways to quietly proclaim Christ as Lord, that means business as usual.

As did the interim constitution of the prior seven years, the new constitution signed by Nepal’s president on Sept. 20 outlaws “any act to convert another person from one religion to another or any act or behavior to undermine or jeopardize the religion of another,” with violations punishable by prison and/or fines.
