Progressive Christianity

by Bill Muehlenberg – 23rd March 2013

It took me less than five seconds to decide whether or not to keep a flyer I found in my mailbox. The 12-pager came from a local Uniting Church, and was full of descriptions about activities it was offering. This is quite typical of the UC, with an emphasis on everything except biblical Christianity.

But just as I was about to toss it into the bin, I finally saw something actually speaking about the faith. It mentioned an exploration of “Progressive Christianity”. Instantly I knew where this church was coming from, and instantly I knew I had an article on my hands.

The pamphlet itself was full of all the courses and activities this church was involved in. On offer were watercolour painting, yoga and relaxation, cake decorating, tai chi, square dancing, etc. The trouble is of course, when the church seeks to compete with the world in offering worldly activities, the world usually does a much better job of this.

These churches seek to be trendy and relevant by downplaying the gospel and offering everything the world does. But in that case, why even bother? Let the world offer worldly stuff. But this is all par for the course with a denomination which has long ago abandoned biblical orthodoxy.

But the tie in to Progressive Christianity shows us exactly where this church is at. Indeed, a case can be made that whenever one finds the adjective ‘progressive’ prefixed to the word ‘Christianity,’ one should flee to the hills. One might almost say the phrase is a clear-cut oxymoron.

Poll: Half of Brits Mistrust Pastors and Priests

Only around a half of Britons trust the clergy to tell the truth, and a similar proportion think the Church of England does a bad job of providing moral leadership, a poll showed on Sunday.

The survey by pollster YouGov commissioned by Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper further showed that 69 percent of respondents thought the Church of England, mother church of the world’s 80-million-strong Anglican communion, was out of touch.

Forty percent of those polled said they did not trust priests, vicars and other clergy to tell the truth, and overall doctors, teachers and judges were rated as more trustworthy.

Fifty-four percent believe the Church of England has struggled to give moral leadership, the poll found.

TD Jakes Tired of ‘Hollywood Spirit,’ Focus on Preachers’ Popularity

By Stoyan Zaimov , Christian Post Reporter – April 11, 2013

Bishop TD Jakes of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, said in a recent sermon that he is tired of the “Hollywood spirit” that has taken over the church and placed a large focus on the size and popularity of ministries rather than the value of the message they preach.

“I am so sick of this Hollywood spirit that has overtaken the church,” Jakes said, according to The Atlanta Daily World.

The preacher leads one of the largest megachurches in America, attracting a congregation of 30,000 members and celebrates its milestone 35th anniversary last year.

Despite this, Jakes, who is also a filmmaker and bestselling author, said that what is important is the message, and not how popular the speaker is.

“We do not have to have big names to have a big move of God,” Jakes said. “I got filled up with the Holy Ghost by somebody that didn’t have no name at all.”

Confronting the Error of Hyper-Grace

Charisma News – 2/18/2013 – Michael Brown

The biblical message of grace is wonderful, glorious and life-transforming. We can’t live without it for one second of our lives. But there is a message being preached today in the name of a new grace reformation, mixing powerful truth with dangerous error. I call it hyper-grace.

One of the foundational doctrines of the hyper-grace message is that God does not see the sins of his children, since we have already been made righteous by the blood of Jesus and since all of our sins, past, present and future, have already been forgiven.

That means that the Holy Spirit never convicts believers of sin, that believers never need to confess their sins to God, and that believers never need to repent of their sins, since God sees them as perfect in his sight.

It is easy to see how such teaching can be dangerous, especially to a believer being tempted to compromise.

One hyper-grace teacher wrote this: “When God looks at me, He doesn’t see me through the blood of Christ, He sees me—cleansed! Likewise, He sees us as holy and righteous. He sees us, and He loves what He sees!”

Channel Seven – Australian woman drugged and rapped in Dubai / Today Tonight – Troubled Suburbs in Sydney

Dear friends & family in Christ,

We’re forwarding the following media reports on the increasing exposure of Islamic Sharia law, close to home in Australia, for your ongoing prayerful action.

1) Channel Seven News on Sunday May 12, 2013 – Reporter: Ross Coulthart – Producer: Ali Russell

“With Dubai emerging as a major stopover point for long haul journeys, five hundred flights a month will deliver over one million of us to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the next year. Dubai is being promoted as a luxury high-class paradise in the desert, but the reality is brutally different, as Australian Alicia Gali discovered. Gali took a job in the UAE with one of the world’s biggest hotel chains, Starwood. What happened next makes this story a must-watch for every Australian planning on travelling through the region.

Gali was using her laptop in the hotel’s staff bar when her drink was spiked. She awoke to a nightmare beyond belief: she had been savagely raped by three of her colleagues. Alone and frightened, she took herself to hospital. What Alicia didn’t know is that under the UAE’s strict sharia laws, if the perpetrator does not confess, a rape cannot be convicted without four adult Muslim male witnesses. She was charged with having illicit sex outside marriage, and thrown in a filthy jail cell for eight months.”

“There can only be one set of laws in this country”: UK MP opposes bid for state-sponsored Sharia courts

www.jihadwatch.org

Recently a Sharia court in Britain told an abused wife to stay with her abusive husband and “correct” herself. Britain will see much, much more of that sort of thing (and worse) if Hopkins is not heeded, as he probably won’t be. “Ilkley MP speaks out against Mosques’ Sharia law bid,” from the Wharfedale Observer, April 13:

Keighley and Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins has written to the Justice Secretary stating his opposition to the establishment of Sharia courts.

He was speaking after Bradford Council for Mosques issued a statement calling on the Government to “recognise” the work of Sharia courts, and for them to be “better resourced with an agreed framework”. (more…)

University Puts ‘Stomp on Jesus’ Professor on Leave for Safety Concerns

Charisma News– 4/1/2013 – Gina Meeks

Florida Atlantic University has put Deandre Poole, who had his students write Jesus’ name on paper and stomp on it, on administrative leave.

Florida Atlantic University has put a professor who taught a controversial lesson last month on administrative leave.

The institution announced Friday that Deandre Poole, who had his students write Jesus’ name on paper and stomp on it, was placed on leave for safety reasons.

“As a result of the reaction to a recent exercise in Dr. Poole’s intercultural communications class, the instructor’s personal safety has been compromised,” the university said in a statement.

“Because of this, Dr. Poole will not teach any classes, conduct office hours, or be present at any of FAU’s campuses or sites. Alternate instructors have been assigned to teach Dr. Poole’s classes. Students have been notified and classes will continue as scheduled.”

Great campaign meetings and ministry in Wagga & Albury, NSW

Dear family & friends in Christ,

We thank and praise God for a great weekend for CTFM & RUAP in Wagga & Albury, NSW.

Pr Daniel & team spoke at a RUAP campaign meeting in Wagga on Friday night, a Breakfast and another campaign meeting in Albury on Saturday night.

Following is a very interesting comment that was made by a gentleman after the Breakfast. ”Firstly, I am not a political person , not by a long shot. But I would like to commend you Daniel  on your stance. It is a long time since we have seen any leadership in this country. Personally, I’d have to say I thought Australia as the majority of us have known it, was finished! No hope. But now I can see some light in the darkness. This nation has been sold out. I reckon your party and your own guts give an old Aussie digger like me some hope …I’ve got kids and grandkids. And we’ll be praying for you. Australia may not be finished yet!”

On Sunday Pr Daniel preached at the AM & PM services at Albury Church of Christ.

Those who attended the meetings were greatly touched and challenged to  take a stand to protect our Judeo-Christian heritage and to ‘keep Australia Australian’ for generations to come.

We thank God for very positive media coverage before and after the meetings. You may click the following links to read two more newspaper articles from Wagga & Albury that appeared today Monday the 6th May.

Blacks don’t believe gay rights are the same as civil rights: poll

by Ben Johnson – Mon Apr 01, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 1, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – By a two-to-one margin, blacks reject the notion that homosexual rights compare with the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and ’60s, according to a new poll commissioned by Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television.

The poll found that more blacks oppose redefining marriage and believe clergy are right to denounce homosexuality.

In all, 55 percent of blacks deny the idea “that equal rights for gays are the same as equal rights for African Americans.” Only 28 percent believe they are the same.

Despite the endorsement of prominent black leaders including the president, 42 percent of blacks still believe marriage should be “restricted to a man and a woman,” more than those who believe gays should be able to marry (40 percent).
