The ‘Changing’ Evangelical Movement?

By, Ken Connor, Christian Post        Sat. March 8th, 2008

Ken ConnorPundits love to put their subjects into tidy little boxes—it makes their talking points easier. After all, people in little boxes are not complicated or nuanced. No doubt that’s why the media has long tried to put evangelicals into a box. The problem, however, is that the media has been using the wrong box for evangelicals for decades.

Ever since the rise of the Moral Majority, the media has been labeling evangelicals “values voters.” The assumption has been that evangelicals are concerned with a limited set of values, that they always act on the basis of those limited values, and that they are, therefore, less complicated or sophisticated than the rest of society. Steven J. LawsonMany Christians will arrive at Easter this year celebrating only half of what the holiest day in the Christian calendar signifies.

Mahaney was speaking to hundreds in Orlando, Fla., this past weekend at Ligonier Ministries’ annual national conference, which concluded Saturday.

Seeker Friendly Church Leader Admits They Have Done It All Wrong

By Bob Burney,

If you are older than 40 the name Benjamin Spock is more than familiar. It was Spock that told an entire generation of parents to take it easy, don’t discipline your children and allow them to express themselves. Discipline, he told us, would warp a child’s fragile ego. Millions followed the guru of child development and he remained unchallenged among child rearing professionals. However, before his death Dr. Spock made an amazing discovery: he was wrong. In fact, he said:

We have reared a generation of brats. Parents aren’t firm enough with their children for fear of losing their love or incurring their resentment. This is a cruel deprivation that we professionals have imposed on mothers and fathers. Of course, we did it with the best of intentions. We didn’t realize until it was too late how our know-it-all attitude was undermining the self assurance of parents.

Expert: Liberal Christianity Intensifies Radical Islam Threat

Michelle A. Vu, Christian Post Reporter – 7th February, 2008

The Western church’s growing tendency to blur theological differences and not uphold the absolute truth is contributing to the threat of radical Islam to the Western world, said a highly respected expert on Islam.

“When faced with the uniqueness of Christ we become inclusive. He loves everybody so we talk about love, and hell and damnation goes out the window,” said Sookhdeo. “It becomes too embarrassing. So our church has conformed itself according to society.”

Patrick SookhdeoSookhdeo – a former Muslim and advisor to British, American and NATO military officials on jihadist ideology – recently spoke to 1,500 people at Focus on the Family (FOTF)’s headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo, about the threat of radical Islam to the Western world. The event was broadcasted in two parts by FOTF this week, the last part of which aired on Wednesday.

Christians are afraid to admit that only believers in Jesus Christ will be saved and others – Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists – are lost, because that would be arrogance in a society dominated by secular humanist ideology, Sookhdeo argued. (more…)

President Bush Delivers His Last White House Prayer Breakfast Speech

President George W. Bush acknowledges the applause as he attends the 56th National Prayer Breakfast Thursday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Said the President, by President George W. Bush : Feb 8, 2008 : The White House

“The more time we spend with God, the more we see that He is not a distant king, but a loving Father…When we spend time with the Almighty, we realize how much He has bestowed upon us, and our hearts are filled with joy. We discover that by surrendering our lives to the Almighty, we are strengthened, refreshed, and ready for all that may come.”

The following are excerpts from White House transcripts:

THE PRESIDENT: It is fitting that we gather in prayer, because we recognize a prayerful nation is a stronger nation. (Applause.)

Every President since Dwight Eisenhower has attended the National Prayer Breakfast, and I am really proud to carry on that tradition. It’s an important tradition, and I’m confident Presidents who follow me will do the same. The people in this room come from many different walks of faith. Yet we share one clear conviction: We believe that the Almighty hears our prayers, and answers those who seek Him. That’s what we believe; otherwise, why come? Through the miracle of prayer, we believe He listens—if we listen to His voice and seek…His presence in our lives—our hearts will change. And in so doing, in seeking God, we grow in ways that we could never imagine. (White House photo by Joyce N. Boghosian) (more…)
