Plan for mosque draws anti-Islam sentiment

ANGER at plans for a mosque and evangelical church to be built side-by-side in Melbourne’s east has spilled over amid claims Islam ”directly contravenes our freedom values”.

It was standing room only at the City of Casey chambers in Narre Warren on Tuesday night at one of the last meetings before the council debates a proposal to build a mosque and community centre on a vacant industrial lot in Green Street, Doveton.

The mosque would be next to the church and headquarters of Catch the Fire Ministries, run by controversial anti-Islam Pastor Danny Nalliah who was acquitted of a racial vilification charge brought by the Islamic Council of Victoria in 2006. The church has already been approved by council and construction is expected to begin within weeks.

Residents at the meeting cited traffic concerns, noise pollution, and fears the mosque would be used to preach hate speech.

Mayor Amanda Stapledon repeatedly asked the gallery of about 50 people to be quiet amid booing, cheering and heckling.

”This is not Afghanistan, have some guts for a change!” one man yelled at councillors. Another carried a sign that read: ”We love the Moslems but do not accept the teachings of the Koran”.

Council erupts over proposed Mosque next to Catch The Fire

Dear family & friends in Christ,

We at CTFM are so thankful to everyone who signed the petition against the building of a large Mosque right next to our newly planned CTFM church in Doveton, Victoria. We received more than 1000 signatures and very successfully submitted them to the City of Casey Council yesterday at the Council meeting.

The Casey Council was packed out with more than 100 people, including some holding placards calling on the Mosque project to be rejected by the Council and not to give the building permit. This included CTFM church members, local residents & factory owners.

In total there were more than 1600 signatures against the Mosque submitted by 4-5 different petitions by local residents, factory owners and CTFM supporters, of which many made their voice known at question and answer time.

The Councillors seemed quite shocked at the community outrage against the Mosque, as many people shouted out from the gallery at the different Council members, asking them to vote against the Mosque application in February 2013, when it comes up for voting.

The Deputy Mayor Sam Aziz, originally from Egypt, who is a Coptic Christian, took a very bold stand with the support of another Councillor Rosalie Costani and challenged the Mayor and the other Councillors to take a good look at Islam and the Koran’s teachings, before voting for or against the Mosque.

Councillor Aziz wanted to do a presentation on Islam and the Koran’s teachings, with a power point and video presentation, but unfortunately the Mayor blocked it.  Nevertheless, he still was able to present his case very well, while speaking about the submitted petitions.

Councillor Costani also took a very bold stand and spoke out against the dangers of Islam. The people from the gallery clapped and cheered them on.  On numerous occasions, the Mayor aggressively called the gallery to silence, but then backed down and let them continue.

JOHN HOWARD CLAIMS HISTORY CURRICULUM BIZARRE

Source: Compiled by APN from media reports

Former Prime Minister John Howard has launched a scathing attack on Australia’s national history curriculum, labelling it “unbalanced” and “bizarre”.  The new curriculum to be implemented in most States by 2013 also ignores the importance of British influences, Mr Howard told about 800 people who recently attended the inaugural Sir Paul Hasluck Foundation lecture to mark the legacy of the former WA politician and governor-general. “Choices have to be made in any curriculum and of course it’s impossible to satisfy everybody, but my fear is that if this curriculum remains unamended young Australians of the future will be denied a proper knowledge of our nation’s history,” he said.

Mr Howard said it was good the subject would become compulsory to Year 10 and that it would place more emphasis on indigenous and Asian history. “Beyond those praiseworthy features there is much about the curriculum that I find unbalanced, lacking in priorities and in some cases quite bizarre,” he said. Mr Howard said the conspicuous absence of Australia’s western heritage from the curriculum reflected a growing retreat from self-belief in western civilisation. “It is as if the West must always play the villain simply because it has tended to enjoy more power and economic success than other parts of the world since 1500,” he said.

Luis Palau Reaches 30,000 Young People at Australian Festival

Charisma News – Ann Carroll – 11/26/2012

More than 30 years after his first campaign in Newcastle, evangelist Luis Palau returned to help more than 100 local churches reach new generations with the love and Good News of Jesus.

An estimated 30,000 people flocked to Newcastle’s Foreshore Park Nov. 17-18 for CityFest—two days of live music, kid-friendly shows and activities, and the gospel message presented nightly by Palau. “I have seldom felt the presence of God in a crowd like I felt tonight,” he said after speaking on Saturday.

CityFest included performances by Australian Idol winner Stan Walker, New Zealand rockers Evermore, and praise powerhouses Darlene Zschech and Hillsong. Stunt demonstrations and personal testimonies by extreme sports athletes highlighted the festival’s youthful bent.

Palau’s son and co-evangelist, Andrew Palau, also shared the stage. By the end of the weekend, several hundred people had made the decision to follow Jesus Christ according to response cards.

Great weekend for CTFM & RUAP in Mildura / Christmas Carol Service (Live Webcast) / New Years Eve Service (Live Webcast)

Dear family & friends in Christ,

1) Praise God for a very good weekend of Kingdom impact for Catch the Fire Ministries and Rise Up Australia Party in Mildura where Pr Daniel and a team ministered to several hundred people last Saturday & Sunday.

On Saturday morning Pr Daniel spoke to a group of Pastors & Leaders at a breakfast at Mercure Hotel in Mildura where he shared the vision of Rise Up Australia Party and why we should stand up in this hour to protect and keep Australia Australian. The response was very encouraging, with many Pastors & Leaders taking hundreds of brochures and many membership application forms to give to their congregations.

Then Pr Daniel had the opportunity to speak on 2 local radio stations that also interviewed the RUA Party State President for Victoria and one of the youth leaders. We were so encouraged when WIN TV (Channel 9 in regional Victoria) advertised the meetings. They also filmed the Saturday night public meeting and Sunday morning service at River Edge AOG church. Tonight’s 6.30pm news broadcast on WIN TV is expected to broadcast some of this footage.

People gathered at all meetings were mightily blessed by the Word of God and hearing the vision to take Australia by 2020.  It was so encouraging to see many young people taking up membership and wanting to help RUA Party succeed across our nation. After Pr Daniel finished speaking on Sunday morning, the whole congregation were so impacted, that they got up off their seats and started clapping with great excitement.

We thank the Lord for the new thing He is doing in Australia through corporate united prayer and action of His people. We thank God that Rise Up Australia Party has been raised for an hour such as this to work with the Church to bring Australia back to Jesus and keep it Australian!

Fiery imam invited to speak here

Sydney Morning Herald – December 12, 2012

IT’S billed as the ”largest, the biggest and the best-ever Islamic event in the history of Australia” – a three-day festival for an expected 20,000 Muslims – and it will be held in Melbourne in March.

But the chief attraction is a Saudi imam who has called for violent jihad.

The description above comes from the Australian Islamic Peace Conference Facebook page. It is an extraordinary coup for organiser Waseem Razvi to entice Dr Abdul Rahman al-Sudais who, as the man in charge of Islam’s two holiest mosques in Mecca and Medina, could be considered the world’s foremost imam.

He will be one of many international speakers at the conference – endorsed by the Islamic Council of Victoria, Preston Mosque and leading Muslim groups – in the lead-up to which 1000 local volunteers are being trained to carry out ”dawah” or proselytism for Islam.

But Dr Mark Durie, an Anglican priest, believes Dr al-Sudais should be refused a visa because he has called for the annihilation of the Jews, whom he called the ”scum of humanity”, ”rats of the world”, ”prophet killers” and ”pigs and monkeys”.

Dr Durie, who was an expert witness on the Christian side in the Islamic Council of Victoria case against Catch the Fire Ministries, said that Dr al-Sudais was famous in the Muslim world for his recitations, ”the Pavarotti of the Koran”.

”But he’s not a figure of conciliation and unity, that’s for sure. I’m concerned promoting him in Australia will create a channel of influence for his ideas on Jews and jihad.”

Australia: Muslim cleric openly preaching virtues of jihad terror

Jihad Watch – Posted by Robert on November 4, 2012

“Harun Mehicevic, also known as Abu Talha, returned from Bosnia late last month and is again extolling the virtues of jihad at the Al-Furqan Islamic Information Centre in Springvale South.” The results could be explosive.

“Radical Springvale imam returns to preach jihad,” by Nino Bucci in The Age, November 4 (thanks to Lachlan):

THE leader of an Islamic group at the centre of anti-terror raids has returned from overseas to resume his hardline preaching in Melbourne.

Harun Mehicevic, also known as Abu Talha, returned from Bosnia late last month and is again extolling the virtues of jihad at the Al-Furqan Islamic Information Centre in Springvale South.

The Australian Federal Police raided the centre and Mr Mehicevic’s home in September during an operation that focused on 12 properties, most of them in Melbourne’s south-east. Mr Mehicevic was in Bosnia at the time.

Share the faith? Not for this Doveton pastor

Anti-Islam Pastor Daniel Nalliah says his church, Catch the Fire Ministries, is weeks away from building a $2 million church on an industrial lot in Green Stre

THEY call each other brother, but they can’t yet pray as neighbours.et, Doveton.

But he intends to oppose moves to build a mosque next door, promoted by former Afghanistan government minister Khaliq Fazal.

Mr Fazal said the Omar Farooq Mosque, which would include a community centre and car park, would replace the nearby mosque in Photinia Street where the community has met for the past 16 years.

He said that the residential area was now too small to accommodate its 500 worshippers from different countries.

The City of Casey approved plans for the church in July 2011 and planners are now considering the mosque’s application.

Planning manager Duncan Turner said the council would take into account ”local and state planning policy, the impact on industrial land supply, the intensity of the activities, scale of the building and amenity issues such as car parking”.

Deputy mayor Sam Aziz said he wanted to reserve his view for the council debate early next year, but that ”it would be a very sad day in this country if religion was to come into our decision-making”.I suggest you get to know a lot more before you write your story because what you might find will actually horrify you.”Councillor Aziz said ”the perception in the community is that sometimes in these places words are stated and sermons are given that are not necessarily peaceful. ”Do you know much about Islam?

Mr Fazal, 61, a former minister of public works in Afghanistan, is now a consultant and the public face of those supporting the mosque. ”This is a multicultural country and a multi-faith country. There is a Fijian mosque and a church next to each other on Hallam Road and there is no problem whatsoever.”

When he met Pastor Nalliah for the first time on the barren, weedy Green Street lot the two men shook hands and chatted amicably until Pastor Nalliah said: ”We don’t approve of Nazi ideology but that doesn’t mean that we hate the Germans.

”Frankly,” Pastor Nalliah said, ”I don’t think we can live side by with a mosque next to us based on what’s happening in Europe.”
