Former Archbishop Lays into Islamic Culture

Lord Carey, the former archbishop of Canterbury, has launched a trenchant attack on Islamic culture, saying it was authoritarian, inflexible and under-achieving.

In a speech that will upset sensitive relations between the faiths, he denounced moderate Muslims for failing unequivocally to condemn the “evil” of suicide bombers.

He attacked the “glaring absence” of democracy in Muslim countries, suggested that they had contributed little of major significance to world culture for centuries and criticised the Islamic faith. (more…)

“… if you’re even vaguely familiar with classical Islamic tradition, you’ll recognise at once that we’ve had our reformation, and it’s called al-Qaeda,” Waleed Aly, prominent Australian Muslim and media commentator

THE world, as the pundits ritually remind us at this time each year, changed drastically and irrevocably with the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. And for no group of people has this been more true than for Muslims living in the West.

Could set crucial precedent and have far reaching effect for Egypt’s Christians.

(Cairo, Egypt)—In a move that could have far-reaching implications for Egypt’s Christians, an AFP story in the Middle East Times reports that Egypt’s official religious advisor has ruled that Muslims are free to change their faith as it is a matter between an individual and God.
Mufti Ali Gomaa“The essential question before us is…can a person who is Muslim choose a religion other than Islam? The answer is yes, they can,” Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa said in a posting on a Washington Post-Newsweek forum picked up by the Egyptian press Tuesday. Without elaborating, Gomaa added, that if the conversions undermine the “foundations of society” then it must be dealt with by the judicial system. (more…)

Sharia Law Spreading In Britain

BritainSource: BBC Radio 4

Islamic law is becoming the law of the land in select pockets of Britain.
Though sharia law-the Islamic code of justice-has no legal authority in Britain, some Muslims are sidestepping the English criminal justice system in order to have their cases tried by Islamic judges. “Sharia courts now operate in most larger cities,” said Patrick Sookhdeo, director of the Institute for the Study of Islam and Christianity. “Different sectarian and ethnic groups operate their own courts that cater to their specific needs according to their traditions.” Sookhdeo calls these sharia councils an “alternative parallel unofficial legal system.” (more…)

Londonistan Calling

Vanity Fair Photoby Christopher Hitchens June 2007.

The London neighborhood of the author’s youth, Finsbury Park, is now one of the breeding grounds for a new phenomenon: the British jihadist. How did a nation move from cricket and fish-and-chips to burkas and shoe-bombers in a single generation?  This article by Christopher Hitchens discusses the disturbing radicalisation of young Muslims in Britain, suggesting that some kind of a show-down is inevitable:
Will Britain become an Islamic society regulated by the shari’a, or will it fight for its right not to become one. Further Photos (more…)

Stop The Hatred

Andrew Bolt  -  April 11, 2007 12:00am

MAYBE this time, I thought. Maybe this first Australian Islamic Conference would at last show us the moderate Muslim leaders we’ve searched for.

God, we need them. Look at the latest doings of the hate-preachers we have now.

Take the Mufti of Australia, Sheik Taj el-Din al-Hilaly, who has just given interviews in Iran demanding Muslims stand “in the trenches” with its hostage-taking regime, and is now being investigated for allegedly giving $12,000 to a Lebanese propagandist linked to terrorists.

Meanwhile, the head of the Lebanese Muslim Association, which pays him to preach at Australia’s biggest mosque, has had to seek police protection for suggesting this fool had best shut up. (more…)
