Of race, religion and politics

The Age – March 10, 2013 – John Elder

With its anti-Islam, anti-multicultural stance, Danny Nalliah’s Rise Up Australia Party has been compared to One Nation. But will its policies win seats in the Senate?

National president of Rise Up Australia, Danny Nalliah, left, and below speaking at the election campaign launch in Hallam.

The most interesting thing about Pastor Danny Nalliah isn’t that he reportedly raises people from the dead, or that Jesus talks to him in dreams, or even that he wants every school to be issued with a wooden spoon for the smacking of naughty bottoms – it’s that his moral authority as a politician comes from the colour of his skin.

He both affirmed and joked about it recently at the Victorian launch of his Rise Up Australia Party. During his speech, Nalliah told a story of being interviewed by an SBS journalist who asked if the party, which is stridently anti-Islamic and calls for an end to multiculturalism, was just another Pauline Hanson white-Australia affair.

”Of course,” said Nalliah, whose voice has an unfortunate tendency to become high-pitched when speech-making, ”he couldn’t see me because I was on the telephone. The fact is, he didn’t realise he was born in the day and I was born at night. I said … the man you’re talking to is a black fellow.”

The congregation laughed and clapped, and was then made part of the joke. When the hooting died down, Nalliah continued: ”I said this is not a white Australia Party. More than a third of our members are of non-Anglo-Saxon origin.”

True enough. Among the 100 or so people gathered in Nalliah’s church hall at Hallam – he heads both the fledgling party and the Catch the Fire Ministry – was a healthy sprinkling of black and Asian faces. Nalliah says there are 30 ethnic groups among his followers. ”We have Fijians, Samoans, Arabs, Africans, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis … so many, and they all feel the same way,” he said.

When Casting Out Devils Brings Retaliation

Charisma News – Jennifer LeClaire – 12/8/2012

When you cast out devils by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you (Luke 11:20). But what comes next isn’t always as much fun. There is often natural and spiritual retaliation for setting the captives free.

Although no weapon formed against a deliverance minister can prosper, the enemy nonetheless forms a weapon and takes his best shot. After all, when you cast out devils—when you set the captives free—you just did marked damage to the kingdom of darkness. Whether you are an experienced deliverance minister or just beginning to study the gospel art of casting out devils, entering the battle without expecting the backlash is not wise.

Retaliation From Flesh and Blood

Deliverance was an earmark of Jesus’ ministry. His keen ability to cast out demons was one of the things that made his ministry so popular among the people. But Jesus faced His fair share of retaliation for casting out devils—and so will you if you engage in deliverance ministry.

After Jesus cast the devil out of two demon-possessed men in the region of the Gadarenes, sending them into the swine, the entire town came out to meet Him. But instead of glorifying God as one might expect, they begged him to get out of town (Matt. 8:22-33). If that wasn’t insulting enough, when Jesus cast a devil out of a blind and mute man the Pharisees suggested He was using the power of Satan (Matt. 12:24). And religious spirits were especially indignant that Jesus cast out a devil on the Sabbath day (Luke 13:14). Ultimately, one of the reasons the religious spirits wanted to kill Jesus was because he was setting people free from demonic oppression and, in doing so, threatening their dead religious rule.

Martyrdom of Christians in India Obscured by Under-Reporting

By Morning Star News – January 28, 2013

Four Christians in India died for their faith last year, but incomplete information obscured the anti-Christian hostility in three of the deaths, sources said.

In Tamil Nadu and West Bengal states where the killings took place, area Christians assert that the murders were rooted in opposition to Christianity; specifically, radical Hindus viewing Christianity as a threat to Hinduism and Indian nationalism as a unified identify. In three of the four deaths, however, under-reporting obscured the acts or motives of the attackers.

In India’s eastern state of West Bengal, where two brothers were hacked to death, villagers suspected the men’s wives were practicing witchcraft, according to local press accounts and area Christians. A mob in Palashpari village, near Malda, attacked 38-year-old Sonua Pahari and 32-year-old Baishakhu Pahari with swords, sickles, rods and stones as they lay sleeping in their homes on May 17 at 11 p.m. Area Christians and local press reported that the assailants believed the brothers’ wives had used witchcraft to inflict illness on members of the community.

Express News Service cited one police official as saying, “… they were killed due to belief in witchcraft,” and another who said one victim’s family “… believed in modern [medical] treatment, which made them unpopular in the village.”

In the version published by local press, the assailants were reportedly targeting their wives and ended up killing the men in the process.

March for Life Counters Lack of News Coverage With Social Media

By Alex Murashko , Christian Post ReporterJanuary 26, 2013

Participants in this year’s March for Life, marking the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, seemed less bothered by the mainstream media’s lack of coverage of the estimated half-million people descending on Washington, D.C. to demonstrate against abortion on Friday. That’s because they relied heavily on social media to help shine the spotlight on the movement.

Outside the march, supporters of the pro-life movement were not deterred either. Pope Benedict XVI gave a shout-out on Twitter in nine languages. “I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life,” Benedict tweeted. The Pope has 2.5 million followers on Twitter in just six-week time since he began using the social media heavyweight.

“We have the biggest social media movement online for the pro-life movement educating almost a million people a week with the truth about human life and abortion,” Lila Rose of Action Network, a pro-life investigative journalism group, told Fox News. “Our Facebook at over 430,000 is bigger than Planned Parenthood’s Facebook and they’re a billion dollar abortion chain.”

While TV reports on the march were scarce, a quick Google search Friday evening showed minimal mainstream online media coverage as well. The news of Burt Reynold’s bout with the flu that landed him in the hospital took the top-center slot at CNN.com, while the March for Life story was nowhere to be found on its homepage.

‘Gun Culture’ — What About the ‘Fatherless Culture’?

By Larry Elder- Jewish World Review Jan. 17, 2013/ 6 Shevat, 5773

In 2012, President Barack Obama’s adopted hometown had 506 murders, including more than 60 children. Philadelphia, a city that local television newscasters frequently call ‘Killadelphia,” saw 331 killed last year. In Detroit, 386 people were murdered. The face of gun violence is not Sandy Hook. It is Chicago.

Since 1966, there have been 90 school shootings in the U.S., with 231 fatalities. Yes, Sandy Hook shocked us. But the odds of a child being killed at a school shooting are longer than the odds of being struck by lightning.

Of the 11,000 to 12,000 gun murders each year, more than half involve both black killers and black victims, mostly in urban areas and mostly gang-related. The No. 1 cause of preventable death for young black men is not auto accidents or accidental drowning, but homicide.

Rapper/actor Ice T (“Cop Killer”) and I attended the same high school. In the 1991 John Singleton film “Boyz n the Hood,” the teenagers attend that school, and car-cruise the South Central Los Angeles boulevard after which the school is named.

Alabama Supreme Court Declares A Fetus Is A Child

Jessica Pielko – January 18, 2013

Anti-choice activists are not simply trying to pass abortion restrictions through state legislatures, they are trying to expand existing criminal statutes to create multiple pathways for recognition of fetal rights. The latest example of this strategy comes courtesy of the Alabama Supreme Court and an opinion that held a fetus should be considered a child and therefore is protected under the state’s chemical endangerment law.

The ruling came as the court upheld the convictions of two women whose used illegal drugs while they were pregnant. The two women had been charged with chemically endangering their children in violation of an Alabama law that makes it a crime to expose a child to a controlled substance, a chemical substance such as precursors for manufacturing drugs or drug paraphernalia.

The cases are themselves tragic, even without the additional failure of the criminal justice system here. Hope Ankrom and her newborn son both tested positive for cocaine when the child was born on January 31, 2000. Medical records documented Ankrom’s substance abuse during her pregnancy but she was unable to break her addiction. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, which was suspended, and she was placed on probation for one year, according to the statement.

Great Success of Rise Up Australia Party Launch

Dear fellow Australians,

As Founding Chairman & President of Rise Up Australia Party, on behalf of the National Executive, I wish to thank all those who attended the Party Launch at the National Press Club in Canberra on Monday 11th of Feb 2013.

Also a big thank you to those who could not make it, but have been faithful supporters of the Party.

Words possibly cannot describe the excitement and joy people demonstrated at the Launch, with many stating, “It is about time someone took a stand”. This same sentiment is now echoing right across Australia, with the amazing feedback our Party head office has been receiving in the past 24 hours.

I was so happy as I saw many fellow patriotic Aussies, including many from different ethnic backgrounds, waving their flags and celebrating as our National Anthem was sung, in addition to when they heard that Rise Up Australia Party was committed to ‘Keep Australia Australian.’

This to me and many others was a very historic day. I want to thank the thousands of people who have entered our RUA Party website and the many who have sent comments. It is so exciting to also see our Twitter & Face book pages rapidly increasing over the past 24 hours.

We also want to thank all the Media for a ‘Job Well Done’ in covering the Party launch

Singapore Megachurch Pastor Warns Repealing Homosexuality Laws Threatens Families

By Stoyan Zaimov , Christian Post Reporter –  Jan 18, 2013

Lawrence Khong, senior pastor at Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC), a notable megachurch in Singapore, has warned the nation’s former prime minister that repealing the country’s homosexual sex laws might be a “looming threat” for families.

“Examples from around the world have shown that the repeal of similar laws have led to negative social changes, especially the breakdown of the family as a basic building block and foundation of the society,” Khong expressed in a statement addressing former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, but did not name which countries in particular he had in mind

Singapore has strict laws against homosexuality that have stood in place since colonial times. They are currently being challenged by gay rights activists who insist that they should be repealed.

Khong, 51, leads one of Singapore’s biggest megachurches with 9,000 congregants, which he founded in 1986. Besides being a popular preacher, Knong is also an entertainer, movie producer and magician — he has led stage shows called the “Magic of Love” and “Magic Box” intended to share Christ with others.

Rick Warren Tells ‘Oprah’s Lifeclass’ to Listen to God, Read the Bible

Christian Post Entertainment – Jan 16, 2013

Saddleback Church Senior Pastor Rick Warren, making an appearance on the OWN network’s “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” assigned a “homework assignment” to the audience by telling them to open up the Bible and start reading the Book of John.

“You are a product of your past, but you are not a prisoner of your past. It has influence over you, but it’s just one of the cards,” Warren said on the episode that was aired on Jan. 13, adding that reading the Book of John can help people come to that realization.

While promoting the 10th anniversary of his best-selling non-fiction book, The Purpose Driven Life, Warren created an analogy between life and the card game of poker.

“The cards we are dealt are the things we don’t have control over. I didn’t choose where I was born, when I was born, I didn’t choose my gender, my parents, my race, my natural abilities, my natural weaknesses, but a wise player can even play what seems to be a weak hand, and win the game. There are ways to take what you are given and make the most out of it,” Warren continued.

Winfrey noted that many people spend their time complaining why they weren’t given a different hand in life, and Warren added that people need to accept the life they are given because each and every person is unique.

Obama Calls for Gays to Be ‘Like Anyone Else Under the Law’

By Paul Stanley , Christian Post Reporter – January 21, 2013

In his second inaugural speech, President Obama called for the extension of laws that would give gays more protections and benefits under federal law.

“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,” said Obama.

The president’s comments were made while outlining what seemed to be protections for minorities and undocumented immigrants. The speech, which also falls on the federal holiday that celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., appeared to take on similarities to the former civil rights leader’s infamous “I Have a Dream” speech.

“We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths – that all of us are created equal – is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.”

300+ Christians from 50 different churches unite at National Australia Day Prayer Gathering / Direct link to Channel Ten broadcast with Pr Daniel

Dear family & friends in Christ,

1) We thank and praise our King of kings and LORD of lords for a wonderful 3 hours of Holy Spirit empowered Prayer, Praise, Worship and Intercession on Australia Day, on behalf of our nation where 300+ Christians from 50 different churches from many denominations united in Melbourne to seek our Heavenly Father for Australia’s revival, reformation and transformation in the Kingdom of God!

Pr Daniel was the MC of the meeting, joined by many Ministers of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, from Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Uniting, Salvation Army, Christian Revival Crusade, other Pentecostal and Charismatic churches, who led segments in prayer.

The worship was led by the Indonesian church youth band, as hundreds of passionate patriotic Australian Christians, from many different countries who call Australia home, waved their Australian flags, joining in one accord to lift up the name of Jesus over Australia!

As the Church united in the Spirit of worship, the Christian ministers on stage prayed for our Government, Protection over Australia, Unity & Revival in the Body of Christ, Schools, Youth (who came to the altar for special prayer), Families, Businesses, Armed Forces, Emergency Services, Farmers, Bush Fires, Floods, etc.

Pr Wally from the US, originally from the Philippines, who was very badly tortured and sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for preaching Jesus, shared his powerful testimony of how God miraculously saved him at the final of scheduled execution.

Many were in tears on hearing his extraordinary testimony and mightily challenged to Rise Up Australia for Jesus. He also encouraged the body of Christ to pray for the persecuted Church and to love the Muslim people, who are victims of the deception of the spirit of Islam.

It was very positive for the Kingdom of God, as almost everything we hoped to achieve through this broadcast was.

We wanted our nation to know the dangers of Islam (rejecting the teaching of Quran, but loving the Muslims), that the Church of Jesus Christ is not asleep but awake, that followers of Christ are bold to stand up and declare the truth of God’s Word, that we love our nation Australia and to promote Rise Up Australia Party.

Pr Daniel stated, “This is possibly one of the best interviews I have been a part of for a while. I am very happy with the outcome. I thank God for the many Christians who rejoiced seeing this program.  However, to hear the responses from atheists and others wanting to know about Rise Up Australia Party. In addition to congratulating us for standing up for our nation is very encouraging.

Hamas and Israel: Who Respects Palestinian Lives More?

By Paul de Vries , Special to CP – November 27, 2012

As the Bible teaches us, we should love all our “neighbors,” including all people, everywhere, with special attention in thought and action to show love to the “neighbor” in need. In the present Gaza conflict, we should love all the Palestinian people and all the people of Israel at the same time. Tragically, the hate-filled policies of Hamas, the group that rules Gaza, are very destructive both to the people of Gaza (by using its own women and children as shields) and to the people of Israel (by viciously targeting its civilian population centers). In spite of some of the general media’s efforts to gauze-over the Gaza realities, in this on-going mortal conflict there is no moral equivalence between the two side’s policies. Nevertheless, at time of the writing of this essay there is peace, and we are grateful.

Along with love and peace, patience and endurance are taught in the Bible, too – as well as “turning the other cheek” when attacked on “one cheek.” With remarkable public consistency, the present nation of Israel has for seven years endured an incessant storm of over 11,000 missiles and mortars raining on its people from the terrorist residents of Gaza. As a nation desiring to live at peace with all people, it has mostly restrained itself – and rarely responded with violence to years of deadly violence against it. Now as the vicious, violent attacks upon all the Israeli people have been dramatically increased – with a missile launched against Israel averaging every 6 minutes for seven days, starting November 14, 2012 – Israel has had to respond strongly.

As President Obama observes, absolutely no one can blame Israel for defending itself. The absurd verbal attacks against Israel by the media and by many American Muslim leaders defy credibility, defy basic humanity. All people should now stand strongly with Israel and for its right of self-defense – and to defend all its diverse citizens – including Muslim, Druze, Christian, Jewish and all others.
