Monash University Journalism Article on Rise Up Australia Party

Daniel Nalliah, leader of the Rise Up Australia Party Picture Jackson StilesDear friends,

We’re forwarding the following Monash University Journalism Article by Jackson Stiles regarding Rise Up Australia Party for your interest.

The picture shows Pastor Daniel Nalliah flanked by two Israeli soldiers armed with automatic rifles – a happy snap from one of his tours of the Holy Land.

An Australian flag glints on his tiepin, another is perched in a vase of plastic flowers, and more are strewn across the many Rise Up Australia Party campaign posters in his office.

In a silky Sri Lankan accent, which breaks into Aussie twang whenever he calls you mate, he tells you his party is misunderstood.

“To be honest, I have no clue why they would call us extreme or racist. Our policies are very basic commonsense. If you look back in the ’50s, Labor and Liberal had very similar policies to us,” he says.

“I myself, being the leader and founder and national president of the party, am a black fellow, so it clearly shows that there is no racism. It’s a matter of nationalism.”

Outside the cool refuge of the party’s headquarters, the midday sun beats down savagely on Daniel’s 11-year-old Holden Commodore, doing its very best to fade the bright yellow bumper sticker that reads AUSTRALIA FOR JESUS.

    Hello Pastor Danny,

I have forwarded and email I have sent to my daughter to save me repeating myself, I suppose. I think you would appreciate the book by a leader of the Hamas movement, Mosab Yousef, called the ‘Son of Hamas’ and published a couple of years ago. You are able to check out the website below to know more.

I send this notice to you Ps Danny, because I think you and Mosab would be kindred spirits and maybe reading the book would build on your understanding of the situation in the Holy Land in the recent 20 odd years. It would be so good for someone to sponsor or organise a visit by Mosab, to Australia.

Blessings to you, your family, and your team.

    Geoff & Daphne
