In case you did not get the opportunity to watch the program “Insiders” on 23rd September 2012 on ABC24, attached is the link to the broadcast. If you fast forward it to the 3 minute mark and then watch the footage for the next 2 minutes, you will hear Foreign Minister Bob Carr speak out against the Racial & Religious vilification laws, from New York.  He then refers to the “Pastors” (Daniel Nalliah & Daniel scot) and the long drawn out court case in Victoria.

‘BARRIE CASSIDY: Now the Turkish prime minister, as I understand it, is putting forward a proposal for international laws on religious defamation. What do you make of that idea?

Bob CARR: ‘I don’t think that would be acceptable to the Western world.  We had a little example of how religious vilification laws work in a case that gained some notoriety under the Victorian legislation, and it meant drawn-out legal process directed at some pastors who would have gained, without this, no publicity whatsoever for their criticism of Islam. I think dragging religious disputes into the courts is a very bad notion.

I wouldn’t want to see it reflected in Australian domestic law, and I don’t think it’s a satisfactory international response to this tension.’

It is very encouraging to note that when Bob Carr was Premier for NSW he refused to allow the Racial & Religious vilification laws to be put through parliament in NSW in 2004, based on Catch The Fire Ministries’ court case with the Islamic Council of Vic.

Now as Foreign Minister, once again he speaks out against vilification laws and uses the Pastors long drawn out court case in Victoria as an example to reject Racial & Religious vilification laws, in order to protect free speech.

Pr Daniel stated, “ I thank God for the court case which lasted for 5 years, and cost around 2 million dollars in total ($600,000 paid and 1.4million pro bono), and then having to go through all the death threats, firebombing threats and threats of kidnapping my children, was worth it.  Our case now stands as one of the key reasons for the government refusing to accept or approve the plans to introduce international Religious vilifications laws.  We give God all the glory that we can continue to enjoy Freedom of Speech in Australia and now our court case is setting a precedence all around the world”.

Just after the court case was won in  2007, the then Prime Minister, john Howard told Pr Daniel in Parliament House in Canberra at a private meeting:

“Pastor, this case for freedom of speech that you have won is just not only for you, but you have won it for all  Australians. Our children and grandchildren will benefit from it. You have set a precedence in the judiciary  system. If there be a case anywhere in the world on litigation regarding freedom of speech, there will now be a defence. Thanks you for standing up for all of us and protecting  Freedom of Speech”.

And then he went on to shake Pr Daniel’s hand and thanked him on behalf of Australia.

Pr Daniel stated, “ This was a very special day in my life. I was so humbled to hear what the Prime Minister had to say. I had never ever expected anything like this. Praise God, because what the devil meant for harm, God has brought to victory, and now to see Bob Carr our Foreign minister make such a statement, brings me great joy.

I feel with all my heart that this is only the beginning. There is a long fight ahead of us, and I pray that we will all join hands to protect our beautiful Nation Australia and Keep it Australian, so that we can continue to proclaim the name of Jesus without fear and stand for what we believe in”.
