ANTI-CONVERSION BILL Delayed In Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan FlagPastor Danny NalliahDear Family and Friends in Christ,

I wish to convey my sincere appreciation to all who prayed and acted in order to stop the above bill from getting through the Parliament of Sri Lanka. Below is a report I received a few days ago. Further, I personally spoke to several Christian leaders and others who have now advised me that the President has personally assured some of them that he will not let it pass through Parliament.

The delay tactic is because the President is planning on calling for elections this year and would dissolve Parliament before that. If this happens, all existing bills scheduled to go through Parliament will be automatically cancelled.

So praise God that the threat of the Anti-Conversion Bill is put off for the moment. However, let’s keep praying that it will never come to pass. I was also informed that the Sri Lankan Government was pressured by many western nations, churches, ministries, organizations, and Christians from around the world.

This goes to show that we can make a difference when we stand together in united prayer and action.

Thanks once again.

Blessings,
Pr Danny Nalliah

Anti-Conversion Bill delayed in Parliament

A move by Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) leader Ven. Athureliya Rathana Thera to present the Anti Conversion Bill in Parliament was delayed by a decision taken at the last party leaders’ meeting.  National Unity Alliance (NUA) Leader and Minister Ms. Ferial Ashraff has suggested the bill to be referred to the Parliament Consultative Committee. Accordingly, when this is taken up in future at the Parliament Consultative Committee, the minister in charge of the subject has to be present. Since the Minister in Charge of Buddhasasana is the President, it is unlikely the President attends Parliament in the near future to chair the Consultative Committee meeting.  It is learned that the JHU leader has insisted that the bill has to be placed in the order paper as soon as possible since it is long overdue. He has explained the reasons and the urgency from the point of view of his party. It is learned that the other party leaders also wanted to delay this bill by their silent and non-committal. The NUA leader had requested that such an important bill has to be referred to the Consultative Committee without rushing for non Parliamentarians to be heard on the bill in keeping with the democratic traditions of the Parliament. According to the decision non Parliamentarians outside the Parliament will get the opportunities to express their views on the proposed bill soon, the sources further added. The Buddhist Commission on Unethical Conversion has already demanded the govt. to pass this bill soon. Meanwhile, protests against the bill also have come from several groups recently. The Party Leaders’ meeting was chaired by Speaker W.G.M. Lokubandara

    Dear Daniel,
We give thanks to God for His grace and continue to pray for Sri Lanka.
May the Christian people of Sri Lanka take heart and stand strong in His grace in the midst of suffering and opposition.
Sri Lanka is the gateway to India. A place of great spiritual significance.
Sri Lanka’s battles are the world’s battles.
Am I right in saying this?
May His glory shine through in that beautiful place

Dear Brother and Sister in Christ,
Its not whether we will be able to stop this Bill coming thru, but just like Queen Esther we have to do our part. Some people are so arrogant saying that this Bill shud be enacted awaken the Sri Lankan Christians who are asleep. They (the well-to-do) can afford to flee to other countries in the face of persecution, but what about the poor Christian in the villages?

As a Christian I know our Christian community is so much fragmented and disunited, and are lethargic and complacent not only about the Bill but also about other issues like the War etc.

Only Christ himself can do a miracle in our dear motherland.
