Lahore, Pakistan – Police in eastern Pakistan say they have arrested around 150 people accused of burning dozens of Christian homes in anger over alleged blasphemy.
Hundreds of angry Muslims rampaged through a Christian neighborhood in the city of Lahore on Saturday and burned around 170 houses. The incident started Friday when a Muslim accused a Christian of making offensive comments about Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.
Police official Rai Tahir said on Sunday that a majority of the suspects were identified through TV footage of the violence.
The Christian man, who is in police custody, is being investigated for alleged blasphemy, which in Pakistan can be punished by life in prison or death.
Another police official, Abdur Rehman, says those who rioted are being investigated for alleged arson, robbery, theft, and terrorism. – Sapa-AP
